PKL Season 2 Champion: U Mumba

After suffering heartbreak in the season 1 finals, U Mumba went on to win the PKL title the following season. They excelled throughout the competition, particularly on defence, where they recorded the most tackle points of any team in season 2.

They faced Bengaluru Bulls in the finals, which proved to be a nail-biting and hard-fought battle. The Anup Kumar-led team, on the other hand, held their nerve and won 36-30. Mohit Chillar was their standout performer, racking up 42 tackle points, including three high 5s.

Let’s go over the PKL Season 2 recap:

Shabeer Bapu Sharfudeen was the unsung hero for U Mumba, who has been crowned the ultimate champions of Star Sports Pro Kabaddi Season 2 today. They defeated Bengaluru Bulls 36-30 in a nail-biting finish to the tournament. Shabeer scored a three-point super raid, reintroducing Mumba into the game.

The game began cautiously, with both teams scoring the same number of points. The first session was completely dominated by both defences. Mohit Chhillar was the one who gave Ajay Thakur a hard time for Mumba. He had him four times, leaving him with no point to his name. Surender Nada and Vishal Mane, who both scored two points, were also effective. Only Rajesh Mondal was successful in the attack, earning Bengaluru a single point. Shabeer and Anup scored three and two goals, respectively, during a period in which the defenders ruled the roost.

A high-octane game, the match kept the champions on edge as Bengaluru’s Ajay Thakur came up with a five-point super raid to inflict an all-out on the Mumbai outfit. That was in the 33rd minute, and the scores were tied at 23-23 – the makings of a pot-boiler. The argument eventually ended with Captain Anup Kumar proving his mettle once more, making the right moves at the right time even under pressure. Bengaluru put up a good fight, but Mumba was able to consolidate their position thanks to Rishank’s three points. However, Shabeer’s dismissal tipped the scales in the Bulls’ favour. Despite the absence of Joginder, the Bulls were able to rally, with substitute Rakesh Narwal scoring two raid points.

Manjeet got one, followed by Ajay’s first points of the game. That was the 33rd minute. In retrospect, Ajay’s late act should have come a little sooner. Shabeer returned the compliment, and Mumba was on the mend.

Manjeet tried everything he could to improve his team’s chances, but it was too late. As Bengaluru faltered, Anup and Shabeer kept the scoreboard ticking, taking their team to 29-24 and 30-25. Manjeet went in to touch out Jeeva Kumar, Mohit, Surender Nada, Anup, Vishal Mane, and Jeeva in that order in six successive raids, but it was all in vain.

Finally, Mumba won the battle of the defences by demonstrating their depth in both departments. Add to that Anup’s brains, who kept his cool while making split-second decisions that made the difference.
